In the face of housing market upheaval over the past few years, it’s no exaggeration to say that intelligent, informed design is critical to the success—to the very survival—of your business. That’s why PCBC has created a new, full-day educational forum dedicated to the design innovations that are reinventing housing in response to tectonic shifts—in our economy, demographics, consumer priorities, household formations, and attitudes toward homeownership. You’ll hear from many of housing’s most respected builders, architects and researchers as they explore the design trends that are fueling the industry’s gradual—but growing—recovery. Whether it’s small spaces that live large, or site plans and density solutions yielding new levels of affordability, or multigenerational living, or new innovations in green design, or adapting floor plans for new consumer lifestyles, you’ll take home invaluable insights to stay competitive in today’s ever-shifting market.

GENERAL SESSION KEYNOTE
8:30am–9:30am
The Thank You Economy, Gary Vaynerchuck
In his session, Gary Vaynerchuk teaches entrepreneurs how to take advantage of the current business environment, while also preparing them to succeed as it changes and evolves into what he’s termed “The Thank You Economy.” With the rise of the Internet and the power of the common consumer, businesses must look backwards and scale the caring their grandparents’ businesses exhibited towards their customers, or watch the competition pass them by. Today, individuals and brands that out-care and out-love their competition - those emphasizing quality, value, responsiveness, and attention to detail, among other essentials - see the biggest returns.
FORUM SCHEDULE
9:30am–9:45am
Opening Keynote: Reinventing Residential Design
To kick off the day, we’ll hear a special presentation from one of the most innovative and influential architects of our time. Barry Berkus has been at the forefront of residential design in the U.S. and abroad for over forty years. In this opening address, Berkus will share his vision for new housing and planning forms needed to restart our industry—creating new markets by answering social needs, not simply repurposing design from the past. “Today’s living trends are creating the need for housing forms that can accommodate more lifestyle choices than ever before,” Berkus says. “As we embrace these new trends, housing’s fabric will change. Designers have to adjust.”
Barry Berkus, AIA, Founder & President, B3 Architects/Berkus Design Studio
9:45am–10:45am
Single Family Un-Conventional: Generational Housing, Flex Space and the California Room. Is the consumer buying it?
Faced with a prolonged slump in new-home sales, builders, designers and researchers are finding creative ways to redesign the traditional single family home. With new concepts like generational housing, flex space and outdoor living now coming to market, how are consumers responding? Are energy efficiency and sustainable design features translating into sales? Expert panelists will share their findings on consumer response to the un-conventional single family home.

High Density Detached: New Product for the Infill Markets
Differentiating the single family home goes beyond floor plans; it’s also about unique product types and locations. These builders and architects are making urban lifestyles more affordable by developing near transit, achieving higher densities (in some cases over 20 DU/AC), maximizing square footage with smaller, more efficiently planned spaces (as little as 350 SF), and stoking desire through design that’s green, sexy, fun and modern. They’ll share examples of projects that are gaining traction by bringing costs down while keeping style high.
Moderator: Richard Gollis, Principal, The Concord Group

Multifamily Low Density: For Rent or For Sale and Value Engineered
Between 2010 and 2015, an estimated 9.1 million new renters will enter the housing market, fueling a surge in multifamily demand. In “urban light” markets, garden apartments, condos and townhouses can offer contemporary design and an atmosphere of urban edge while also incorporating desirable green spaces. And smart, sophisticated designs are now pushing the envelope in densities for on-grade walk-up and low-rise (3-4 stories) multifamily housing. A panel of experts will share how they’re rethinking the way multifamily communities are developed—and how to maximize your share of this burgeoning market.
Moderator: Stephen Moore, Senior Partner, BSB Design

Multifamily High Density: Small and Sexy for Gen Y
Rising rents and affordability concerns are driving a new wave of high-rise design innovations, yielding higher densities and lower square footage—without sacrificing livability. Think of it as housing’s version of the Mini Cooper. Through interior architecture that uses every square foot to maximum efficiency, including new lines of compact appliances to accommodate the trend, apartments and condos are getting smaller but living bigger (and greener). These high density experts will share examples of redesigned spaces that replace formality with flexibility, accommodating a wider range of age groups and living situations.
Moderator: John McManus, Editorial Director, Hanley Wood Business Media
Daniel Gehman, AIA, LEED AP, Studio Leader, Harley Ellis Devereaux
Bill Kreager, FAIA, LEED AP, Principal, AECOM
